Sharing Special Moments

November 24th, 2008

The holidays can be a happy time to spend with friends and family. We also see our daycare as a big family because we have the pleasure of spending precious moments with your children. Even my own kids see the others as a brother or sister figure and become very attached. I have 5 children of my own ranging in ages from 6 months to 25 years old and feel blessed to be able to share my experiences with the families I serve. Thank you!

Now is also a time to watch out for school closings, delays and breaks. Watertown City School District will be closed on Wednesday and Friday so please check your district to see if your child has class. Sun Stars & Moon Daycare will be OPEN both of those days.

Parents please remember that we will be celebrating Thanksgiving with a special meal on Wednesday. If you have any questions you are always welcome to ask. Plus we share much of this information in our daily-individualized journals for each child. All allergies are always considered and prepared to each child’s needs.

I will be going to Syracuse for the holiday to spend with my daughter, her fiancé and his family. We are excited to cook and even more to eat!

So that means Thanksgiving is now 4 days away. Next we will start the count down for Christmas and for those that celebrate Hanukah. We are happy to celebrate diversity in whatever holiday you participate in.

With that said, I forgot to share that we spontaneously put up the Christmas tree on Friday. We couldn’t wait! Only 32 days till Santa comes.

Lastly, the CAPC food program inspectors will be in on Monday to complete their annual visit.

Enjoy your holiday!

Thanksgiving Update

November 21st, 2008

Ah… home again! My trip to Texas was very enjoyable as I love spending time with my daughter and grandson. I have a great staff and things at Sun Stars & Moon Daycare went beautifully.

With the holiday just around the corner, this week has been very busy. For arts and crafts and playtime we have made pilgrim hats and played dress up. Everyone (me included) loved this! Then we made napkin holders out of toilet tissue rolls and had a contest for the most artistic style. We made a big mess which made it even more fun.

As a reminder, Sun, Stars & Moon Daycare will be CLOSED on Thanksgiving to observe the holiday, but we will be open regular hours the day before and after. Since holidays are our favorite here, we’ll be celebrating on Wednesday with a Thanksgiving meal including turkey, gravy, stuffing, potatoes, cranberries and pie. MMM-MMM Good!

Next, we would like to welcome another new addition to the group. Claire is 2 years old and we are so glad to have her with us! That makes Sun Stars & Moon just about full!!!

Additionally, we can’t forget to wish our assistant Heather a HAPPY BIRTHDAY today. She has been an important staff member for many years. Thank you, Heather, for all of your hard work and of course – Happy Birthday!. It’s Heather’s Birthday!

That’s all from us! Remember, the countdown is 6 days until Thanksgiving. This is the time to spend time with your loved ones whenever possible. See you here next time!

Welcome our New Addition – We have more Staff!!

November 13th, 2008

Hi it’s Mrs. Jones owner and provider of Sun Stars & Moon. Thank you to all that have been commented and following our blog!
Oh we forgot explain the process that our children have been doing with the green beans. They were so excited they asked me to share this week. Actually there are 3 different plants that range in length from 14,11,9 inches tall. Did you know that the roots hold the plant in the soil? They also soak up water and other minerals from the soil. The stems actually hold up the plant and carry water from the roots to the leaves and food from the leaves to other parts of the plant. The children were surprised to learn that the leaves make a plant’s food. Did you know that?
On thursday the kids will make jello shapes in food prepation it’s so fun and messy to play with and eat. We are making pilgram hats and turkeys for arts and crafts over the next couple days. We will use our hands to make the turkey feathers with paint of all different colors. Heather, my assistant, and I are working very hard to make the holidays the best for the children with a variety of things to do. We are getting a new substitute and her name is Tasha. The children are very comfortable with her because she is so interactive. We look forward to bring her on the Sun Stars & Moon Daycare TEAM!!
I am leaving for Texas for the weekend to see my daughter and grandson, but day care will still be open and having alot of fun. See you all when I get back on Tuesday.

Veterans Day

November 10th, 2008

Hi parents, we hope all is well. Tuesday, November 11th is Veterans Day!

Sun Stars & Moon Daycare would like to thank all of those who have served in the military. We are so grateful that we are protected and will be able to honor people for their dedication to our country. We live very close to Fort Drum, which is a military base nearby and many of my children are apart of military families.

That’s why this blog has been such a wonderful way to stay connected with all of our parents and discuss what’s happening at Sun Stars & Moon Daycare.

We have also been in the process of updating/remodeling our bathroom so we are pooped. It has been lots of fun but a ton of hard work. Sun Stars & Moon is always trying to stay as updated as possible. After all of that work we are in need of loads of play. In addition to our food preparation days and baking muffins we will be evaluating our growing green beans.

The kids planted 4 inside green bean plants that have grown about 14 inches tall. We started about 3 weeks ago with a growing kit that allows the children to see the roots grow in the soil. It has been a great learning experience for all.

Don’t forget our Thanksgiving count down…only 17 days left!!!

Election Day is also important to us…

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for your support and feedback thus far. This week at Sun Stars & Moon Daycare we are acknowledging our hardworking and understanding parents. Holidays can sometimes pose a challenge for parents in juggling many obligations. I would highly recommend to all families that use a daycare facility to have a “backup plan”. Depending on your work schedule and the hours and holiday closings of your daycare program a backup provider may be necessary. Please ask us as we may have some suggestions.

I would also like to welcome Michael a 2-year-old boy who will be joining us this week. All of the staff is very excited!

In addition, we are also in the process of waiting for our renewal for NAFCC. We are expecting the observation person to contact us shortly. This is important to us as we provide high quality care and are committed to professionalism in our industry.

Don’t forget Thanksgiving is now on it’s way…. only 24 days left! We will soon be sharing with you the fun activities that we are planning for the holiday.

Please share your ideas and thoughts with us! We look forward to hearing from you. I hope you have all voted….we are waiting for the results to come in……. It’s important to be active in our community!

Halloween Party

October 29th, 2008

This week we are celebrating Halloween with a party. We will make Halloween sugar cookies and decorate them scary. All activities and curriculum are tailored toward this holiday. Don’t forget we are closing at 3pm on Friday this way all parents can have more time to take their children out trick or treating. Dress warm snow has arrived.

Just on the side we are working on updating our website with a galleries page. Stay tuned. I have also had recent conversations with some of our military families that would really enjoy seeing what their children are doing, although there are real-time sites that we work with…more on that next week. We are exploring some options related to secure passwords and profiles to view your children’s pictures. What are your thoughts?

Lastly, I should also highlight that in Jefferson County I am the only daycare provider that is a member of the National Association of Childcare providers, which is a higher standard of the profession. You too should verify this information with your provider. Enjoy the week!

First Post for Week 10/20-10/24

Building Blocks
In an effort to keep you connected with your child at Sun, Stars & Moon Daycare this week I will share with you a briefing of our upcoming activities. For all others considering a daycare program please feel free to ask questions as we go along.

The curriculum is tailored to each child’s age and capability levels. Please see below for a brief overview of each activity:

• Pre-K children will practice recognizing ordinal numbers and second position skills.
• Toddlers will be introduced to a new shape…the circle!!! We will practice tracing it and coloring it in.
• Infants will try hand-to-hand coordination by transferring one item from one hand to another. As an infant discovers their strength they become curious of what its capabilities are.

Throughout the week we will also enjoy playing with bubbles, soft big blocks and dancing. If the weather is warm we may to get outside for a bit of fresh air. I can’t forget our special storybook time, which will be Monsters, Inc.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays we explore food preparation. This week we will cook orange jello with gummy worms and strawberry dipped bananas. Below is an example of our menu:

Monday
Breakfast – wheat toast, sliced apples and milk
(whole milk for children between the age of 1 and 2, 1% milk for those over the age of 2)
AM Snack – 100% juice with peanut butter and saltine crackers
Lunch – grilled cheese, applesauce, green beans and milk
PM Snack – milk with celery and ranch dressing

We provide alternatives for all of our food if needed. All meals are USDA Approved and held to the CACFP Nutrition & Health standards.

Also, with Halloween around the corner we like to celebrate the season in allowing our children to be as creative as possible. Plus, its fun!! So this week during the afternoon Arts and Crafts time we are going to make a variety of paper bag monster puppets.

Oh and don’t forget our Halloween Party will be on Thursday, October 30th at 2pm. All parents are invited to come eat and dance to Halloween howling music. Parents please remember to send your child’s costume, as we will have a mini parade at 1:45pm. Parents are also encouraged to dress up. There will also be brownies, juice and cupcakes. Come and join the fun!

Please know that there is assistance out there for families in need. NACCRA is a military assistance program. In addition, Sun, Stars & Moon Daycare has flexible hours, as we are open 6am to 6pm. On a case-by-case basis we also provide evening and overnight care.
