I’m BACK!!!

May 7th, 2009

Hello Everyone,

I am back! I’ve been very busy the past two months and hope I haven’t lost anyone along the way. I had a parent recently ask me about the typical program that we follow at Sun Stars & Moon daycare and thought I would share it with all of you as well.

As I have mentioned in previous blogs, all of our activities are tailored to the child’s age & skill level. All of the staff is focused when working with the children making sure we are providing quality care.

Our daily program varies, but mainly consists of breakfast, pre-school reading, writing, thinking skills, am/pm snacks, play-time (weather permitting), story time and art & crafts.

We are constantly working on listening and motor skills, as well as, social-emotional development. We find that simply having fun is a great way to incorporate healthy life skills. So we dance, blow bubbles, play in the sand, hoola hoop, play in the water, cook, do puppet shows and plant flowers.

We also love to get new ideas from our families and friends so please email me with any thing you feel would be fun for all our children do learn and do. Stay in touch!

Be well,

Lisa Jones

How do you DISCIPLINE your child?

March 8th, 2009

It’s important to know that babies/children are naturally curious and they easily give into temptation. For children under 2 years of age we find eliminating the appeal is the best way to redirect the child’s attention. If it’s too late and they are already moving toward something unacceptable say no, but use a calm voice first. A firm voice can appear to gain the desired response, but your child is really reacting to your emotions. Be consistent and try a calm voice.

You are the parent and the one in control, although I know it doesn’t always feel that way. Try to be clear when disciplining and explain why you are doing what you are and what you expect going forward. Get in the habbit and start doing this early on in your child’s life. Never hit, spank, or slap a child of any age. The message you are sending is that physical behavior is acceptable.

Our children are developing at these young ages and can’t make the connection or difference between their behavior and physical punishment. Pain will be the only emotion they feel.

So please don’t forget that children learn by what you do. Be a role-model and set the right standards.

Please share with us your discipline techniques. Also, there are several resources out there to help guide us parents. Even if you are on your 2nd, 3rd and so on you too can learn something helpful.

If you have any questions feel free to email me. ~Lisa

Cold or the Flu?

February 10th, 2009

Dear Parents,

With the temporary break in the weather please remember that it’s till winter. I find many children get confused on how to dress when the weather warms a bit. Remember 30 degrees is still very cold!

Here are some tips I found on FluFACTS.com that you could look for to help tell the difference between a Cold and the Flu.

“The cold and flu are both respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different types of viruses. Flu symptoms usually come on quickly (within 3-6 hours) and consist of a fever, body aches, dry cough, and extreme tiredness. Cold symptoms are less severe and people experience a stuffy nose, productive cough, slight tiredness, and limited body aches. Remember that if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, it is better to act fast and speak to your doctor within 12 to 48 hours you maybe able to gets medications if you catch it in time.”

I would suggest reviewing your childcare providers contract for their specific rules. Please feel free to reference my contact posted on my website at www.sunstarsmoondaycare.com

Stay Healthy,

Backup Child Care

January 30th, 2009

Hello Everyone! Hope the snowy cold weather isn’t keeping you down. I found some really great information that I thought was suiting to recent school closings and/or delays. The majority of the information is from an article on the NACCRRA website. I have tailored some of the details to our facilities specific rules. I hope this is helpful when preparing for situations like these.
Even the best-planned childcare arrangements can be disrupted from time to time. Without emergency care, more commonly known as backup care, working parents may be forced to stay home or bring their child to work with them. By planning ahead and knowing your options, you can be prepared to meet the unexpected.

“It’s a parent’s responsibility!”

Backup care may be needed whenever your regular childcare arrangements are not available. Backup care can be used when your child is ill, when providers resign, or go out of business, when schools are closed, or any situation in which your regular childcare arrangements fall through.

Work Considerations

For two parent families, the best place to begin is to talk your spouse or partner ahead of time about your individual work schedules. Decide who can stay home and when. Be sure you know your time-off options at work so you will be ready when your child is under the weather or an emergency arises.

Be sure you know all the policies at your job regarding time off, sick time and flexibility in your hours at work. You may want to speak with your manager to arrange how your work will be done during your absence.

Ask your employer about backup care. More and more businesses are realizing that by helping employees when childcare arrangements break down or children are ill, they reduce unscheduled absences and create savings for the company. Some employers subsidize a portion of the cost of backup care for their employees. Sometimes companies sponsor arrangements by setting aside backup childcare slots in the community, having a program at the worksite, or providing a service to come into an employee’s home.

Check It Out

If you haven’t already asked, now is the time to find out how your regular provider can help. Ask about policies for ill children, scheduled closed days, and substitute care. Discuss with your caregiver your need for as much notice as possible and whether she has any friends who might be able to help you in a pinch.

“Prior planning can prevent an unnecessary situation”

Whether you’re going to use a drop-in center or temporary caregivers, it’s a good idea to call and schedule a visit. Both you and your child will feel more comfortable on the day you need care if you’ve made the time to visit beforehand. Many programs are open early in the morning and early evening, which may be more convenient times for you to visit.

Visit as many potential caregivers as possible. Let your child explore as you ask questions to determine whether you’re comfortable with the quality of care. Just as you searched for regular childcare, you will be looking for a safe, healthy, and comfortable place to leave your child.

Your Child Is Ill

Children inevitably get sick and for working parents these illnesses can cause great difficulty. It can be tough to judge if your child is too ill to attend your regular childcare program. Ask yourself if your child can participate comfortably and whether his needs will not interfere with the care of the other children. Be familiar with your childcare program’s policies on illness. Do not pressure your caregivers to take your sick child, as it is their responsibility to maintain a healthy environment for all the children enrolled.

“Some family childcare providers may provide temporary care. Some daycare provider may have a list or names for you to use as back up providers. If your child is very sick you will want to be with your child.
Your childcare provider has an emergency… the school boiler just burst… your child is mildly ill. Whatever the reason, you have to work and have a need for backup care.”

When Would I Need Backup Care?

When your child is ill, Weather Alert or has a sudden emergency. Your child’s school or center is closed for a holiday, vacation, inclement weather or emergency.

Please consider these things as you and your provider plan for a back up. Share your experiences with these situations.

Town Hall Meeting – It’s time to speak up!

January 16th, 2009

Hello to All that have been following along with us at Sun, Stars & Moon Daycare.

The time has come, to do my taxes. Yay! I have been and will be spending extra hours preparing my financials to take them to my accountant. Luckily, I keep track of all my information throughout the year, which makes the process a littler easier.
watertown.jpg
I also went to a town hall meeting last Sunday to address a concern with subsidies that could potentially affect daycare providers, parents and furthermore the greater child services industry in Jefferson County. When I heard that Governor Patterson would be holding a series of town hall meetinsg across Upstate New York I knew that I had to be there. Time was limited so only a select number of questions were answered at the meeting. For those that didn’t get a direct response an answer will be provided soon. When I hear something I’ll post it for everyone to read.

In an effort to keep you informed on the adoption of our son Cameron Anthony we would like to share that it has been temporarily postponed. The judge is requesting additional information for legal purposes. These processes never seem to go as fast as you would like. The good thing is we have Cameron and don’t care how long it takes we will wait until he is forever ours. We love him!

As for the Sun, Stars & Moon family we are doing well. We are growing as we speak and having lots of fun. My grandson Jensen is enjoying playing with others his age. My daughter Ronda does a great job with the children and gets along well with the parents.

I have really enjoyed the people that have contacted me with their questions. Please feel free to share your experiences.

Always, Lisa

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday!

2009 is the Year of the Ox, which is also known by its formal name of Yi Chou. The Chinese New Year is a holiday that lasts fifteen days. It begins on the first day of the lunar New Year January 26th. Kids and their families celebrate with fireworks and parades. A big feast is usually eaten on New Year’s Eve. Don’t forget to wear something red for good luck.

Just a note to let everyone know that our court adoption date is set for this Thursday, January 8th for our son Cameron Anthony. We are so excited because this is a big day for our family. We have taken many children in our home over the years and are happy to add a new addition. I see him as my own son and love watching him grow.

Also, my daughter Ronda came up from Texas. She will be assisting in daycare while we continue to grow our staff. She has been through the normal clearing procedures as all of my providers do. She has also brought my grandson Jensen whom has grown a lot and is very tall. We are so very happy to have them home to visit for a while.

If anyone would like to share how there holiday went please do. We look forward to a great year!

Thanks, Lisa.

Cold Season

December 25th, 2008

For all that celebrate Christmas…. I hope you are enjoying your holiday with your family!
cold.jpg

I am spending time with mine today and happy that my son (Anthony) is back from the hospital. About a week ago, we discovered that Anthony was having troubles breathing with a slight cough. Once we took him to the doctors they admitted him for pneumonia. Luckily my husband was on vacation and was able to spend time with him at the hospital.

Parents, I understand that raising a family isn’t easy. Having to be prepared for the unexpected, such as, when a child gets sick it can be difficult. I try to practice what I preach by having “backup” for my family as well.

We are in the flu season so please try to be prepared. I am happy to help in finding a babysitter when your child may be sick. At Sun Stars & Moon Daycare we try to protect your child from the many illnesses that may arise.

Now, on to welcome 2 more additions to the Sun Stars & Moon Daycare family, Imani and Landon. Imani is a precious little 2-year-old girl that we look forward to getting to know. Landon is a 3-year-old boy who has a ton of energy and already getting along great with all of the kids. Welcome aboard!!

Soon we will be having fun with arts and crafts surrounding the festivities of the New Year and Lunar New Year.

Please feel free to share your holiday family experiences. Hope to hear from you!

Always, Lisa

Guest Speaker

December 16th, 2008

Hi Parents,

This week we have a guest speaker. Her name is Julia Velazquez and she is my 25-year-old daughter that lives in Syracuse. Over the last 5 years, I have worked closely with her on many projects as she consults small businesses at M&T Bank. Below is a brief commentary of her advice.

“Hi everyone. I am excited that my mom allowed me to share my thoughts with you all. Although I don’t have any children and have never run a daycare I have watched my mother build her business over the past 10 years plus. First, I should start by explaining that I am a small business banker and work with businesses in several capacities. Starting, running and growing a business can be challenging. On top of all that having passion for what you do is important. There is no one that I know that loves children more than my mom. She is the storybook mother that wants all children to be warm, full and loved. I know from first hand experience that she cares for all of her daycare children with the utmost concern. She is always looking for innovative ways to provide the very best playful environment.” – Julia

Thanks Julia for your support. As Julia mentioned, we are always looking for the best. With that said, we have added a new assistant to the Sun, Stars & Moon Daycare Team. Please welcome Eric Brown. He has been with us for almost a week now and fitting in nicely.

Eric and I will be spending some time in the early mornings preparing for our review on Thursday. We will keep you updated.

I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season. Please feel free to ask any questions and share your stories. Until next time.

Yours truly,

Lisa Jones

Quality Child Care Wanted…and Fast!

December 8th, 2008

child-care.jpgAs a daycare provider that has been in business for over 10 years and raising 5 children of my own, I understand the need for quality care. Recently, I have had a few conversations surrounding babysitting services. By babysitter we are talking about specific situations where childcare is needed for a few hours at a time and not a routine occurrence. Outside of having a daycare that you can trust while knowing your child is getting the best care, what happens in those one-time instances?

Quality childcare is in short supply right now as holiday party invitations, dinners with the boss, and cocktail socials abound. ‘Tis the season, after all. But for most parents with young children, these events also create a special stress that comes with trying to make child care arrangements, and not having to worry all evening about their safety and welfare. I hope this site helps all of you that are searching for additional help. You can find tips to consider when choosing a babysitter.

As a protective mother I found it difficult to allow just anyone to care for my children. Often times, family or very close friends were the only outlets I felt comfortable with. I later realized that interviewing for a babysitter was very appropriate and needed. Don’t feel silly when it comes to your children: get references and ask questions.

Please feel free to share your experiences of finding a daycare or babysitter.

Shopping Season in Full Swing

December 2nd, 2008

Happy Holidays,

hh.jpg

We are in full swing with the holiday season upon us and I am ready to shop! According to the local news this years Black Friday sales were up by 25% compared to last year. Hopefully that means in Upstate NY we are doing well.

I know many parents that went to get the good deals on toys and electronics. With 3 young children of my own and a grandson I am always looking for what’s new and innovative.

Every year we take great pride in decorating our home as well as our daycare. My husband spends hours putting together the best light show in town. He tries to out do himself every year! The children and I also decorate the daycare to celebrate each holiday for several cultures.

Most of the children celebrate Christmas, however, we also have kids that participate in Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. Therefore, many of our arts and crafts activities incorporate a variety of cultures.

Also, a bit of housekeeping: We are currently accepting applications for a full-time Daycare Assistant. We are sad to announce that our staff Heather has accepted a position elsewhere and will be greatly missed by all of us. Thank you for all of your hard work.

Just a little reminder, today was Claire’s 1st official day. She is the two-year-old little girl with a lot of energy and spunk. Please take a moment and help me welcome her one more time to the Sun, Stars & Moon family.

Lastly, I would like to share that very soon the adoption of my youngest son Cameron Anthony Jones will be finalized within the next month. We have been truly blessed by him coming into our lives.

Have a great week at work parents and your kids and I will be learning new things and having fun!!
